June 2008 - I visited the Orleans franchise of Moe’s Southwest Grill even before their official opening. The restaurant is more like Taco Bell than like Mexicali Rosa’s. However, the selection is more interesting and more varied than Taco Bell. The salsa bar alone is unique: regular choices like “el guapo in-famous salsa” or “who is Kaiser Salsa?” (an illusion to Hollywood’s “The Usual Suspects”). The hotter salsa options were rock and roll and hard rock sauce, hard rock had too much bite for me. The green tomatilla was a good compromise. Meals come with free chips (not fries) for exploring the salsa bar. However, there’s nothing to stop you from adding salsa straight to your taco, quesadilla, fajita or nacho. Your food will benefit from the extra spice.
I’m not a salad-kind-of-guy. You can’t win friends with salad. Nevertheless, offer the salad in an edible bread bowl and I’m there. I thoroughly enjoyed my “close talker” salad (chicken rather than steak, beef or tofu). My dining partner and I were both stuffed when we left. And we didn’t even get to the yummy dessert cookies.
My dining partner purchased a joey combo which includes chips, fountain drink and a “joey bag of donuts” (a good size burrito with meat, beans (black or pinto), lots of heavy rice, cheese and pico de gallo. As for the names given the selections on the menu, trivia from the big and small screen.
Staff will shout at you upon entering the restaurant: Welcome to Moe’s!
