January 2008 - We had heard good things about the new Barley Mow franchise so we took a hike to check it out. It felt so good to be treated well by the hostess. Some recent dining experiences have not been pleasant. Perhaps the Christmas rush was tough on staff.
I tried the Malaysian chicken while my partner ordered the saffron and leek halibut. The halibut was accompanied by rice, steamed carrots, broccoli and red onions. The halibut steak looked wonderful and the texture was fine but the taste was missing. I guess that’s the best you can expect for fresh fish in Ottawa.
The Malaysian chicken was an interesting dish built on a pile of yellow Shanghai noodles in a bowl. It actually resembled Kraft dinner but tasted nothing like it. The noodles hid a mixture of chicken pieces, red hot chili peppers, broccoli, red cabbage and coconut milk curry. It was nice and spicy.
The establishment is new enough that the bathrooms still look and smell new.
We must make a trip back to try out their desserts as well as more regular fried pub fare like chippers.
