February 2008 - This location in the Fallingbrook Mall has hosted a number of incarnations over the years. The previous two tenants also sold Mediterranean cuisine. Today, The King (not The Garlic King) offers “authentic Lebanese cuisine” and “Ottawa’s best shawarma.”
I went for the shish taouk plate, actually two plates today. Rather than the falafel and shawarma meat that has spent all day warming (or perhaps days warming in some restaurants), I prefer to wait the twenty minutes while my chicken is roasted fresh on the kebab. The plate comes with rice, potatoes, pita, garlic sauce, turnip and two sides - in my case, always hommus and tabouleh. The King included a pleasant surprise tonight, big fresh mushrooms. The tabouleh was dry but there was lots of sauce to help it along.
I also can’t resist grape leaves. That extra side order was delicious.
The restaurant has only five tables but they’re comfortable. I enjoyed watching Peachtree TV while awaiting my order. By the time my kebabs were ready, there was a queue out the door of other hungry diners placing orders. That says it all!
