February 2008 - Ruby King is one of our neighbourhood regular visits when we're hungry but
not picky. It is located near the Place d'Orleans Mall on the south side of
St. Joseph Boulevard. It is clean and spacious, serving a Chinese buffet
seven days a week. You never have to wait for your food but you might have
to elbow in on a busy evening. The prices are a little higher at dinner
time and on weekends. In return they offer a little better selection in
those times -- like freshly grilled shrimp, pork, beef and chicken strips
and/or roast beef and/or mussels. Otherwise it is a mediocre selection of
medium-grade Cantonese and Szechuan food -- chicken wings, chicken fried
rice, ribs and pork and noodle dishes, sometimes salmon. A few kid-friendly
options are available at times -- pizza, fries, onion rings. I like the hot
and sour soup and the salad bar is always full of crunchy fresh veggies but
there are only bottled, gluey dressings. The desserts, like most Chinese
restaurants, are barely passable -- jello and tinned fruit, bland cakes and
pastries. Sometimes they have lovely almond biscuits. Thank goodness for
the green tea ice cream.
The service has always been prompt and friendly here as they usually only
need to clear plates and refill water glasses or tea pots. I've never seen
anyone order from the menu but I hear they have one and a take-out menu as
well. This is a good place to feed a varied group when you want everyone to
find something they like and in just the amounts they feel like eating.
That flexibility brings us back. Seniors get a 10 per cent discount any
time. There is a party/meeting room available. Bathrooms are less than
sparkling and down a long flight of stairs at the back.
