March 2008 - Hava Java is a rare independent cafe in Ottawa. It seems they're few and far between in the downtown core anyways. Hava Java, aside from its barista-served caffeine products, also has a small selection of deli-style lunch items to take out or eat in. The proud owner serves with attention to detail and entrepreneurial zeal. She managed to convince us on an unplanned biscotti and decaf americano on our way out. For lunch, my friend and I had the simple egg salad sandwich - though it was done right for a change on fresh baked, thick multi-grain bread and not overly mayonnaised. My friend had a minestrone soup, and I had the vegetable - both seemingly homemade which was a plus. The layout of Hava Java is European casual. A small cozy leather coach area sits in the middle of the narrow cafe, and two nice round tables at the back with high, comfortable stools to enjoy lunch. A pleasant atmosphere for a quick lunch for sure, although the owner's "attention to detail" feels a little oppressive to the staff here as she seems to remind them of the details of every one of their actions as they work. I also think she slightly overcharged us for our food - however, it wasn't such a big deal.
