by David (from Orleans) May 2008 - We wandered into Pilo's (so spelled on their printed receipt) on a Friday afternoon, just before one, not realizing that reservations are recommended on a Friday at lunchtime. This long-popular Greek restaurant in the east end of Ottawa draws a good crowd regularly and Friday noon is a favourite time slot. Fortunately there were only two of us and some poor saps had to get back to the office.
The decor is dark wood covered with Greek scenes, photos and many, many business awards. Wait staff were plentiful. My companion for lunch was a native Greek who had never visited Pilo's before so I was eager to get her opinion. We ordered two lunch specials at $9.99 each, very reasonable considering the huge portions -- granted mostly rice and potato but if you're hungry, you soon won't be. The waitress was prompt and helpful. I asked at first for a Greek salad with an add-on of one souvlaki stick, not wanting to face the carb overload of the lunch platter. She offered to give me the lunch platter, extra salad, hold the starch, for the same $9.99, saving me about $4. My friend ordered the mousaka (that's moose-a-KAH, not moose-AH-ka) with the whole platter of fixings that included rice, potato, a small salad with olives and tzatziki, and crunchy, hot, fresh garlic toast on the side. Okay, I gave in to that starch! Twice! The food was fast and fresh and mouthwateringly good. The mousaka serving was small but passed the authentic Greek test. The souvlaki was slightly charred, just right. The feta had a nice bite and was nicely sized for the salad, not too much, not too little.
We couldn't leave out little piece of Greek paradise without a coffee and piece of baclava to share. I thought it was delightful, nutty and flaky and not too sweet, but my expert at the table said, "Ah, a corner piece" (that means too tough or too crunchy) and, "No, mine is better" (which means the flaky pastry didn't quite melt in the mouth like it should have.) Still we had a great lunch with coffee and dessert for $31. Evening entree prices run from $13 for the vegetarian "moose-ah-KAH" to $34.95 for the seafood platter. Take-out is available but for pick-up only.
We recommend reserving on weekends or busy holiday evenings. We'll be back. Opa!
