June 2008 - So, my friend, whose been living in Ottawa longer than me, tells me that finding good sushi in Ottawa is not an easy thing. She's from Vancouver, so there's a high standard she has set. I met her at Wasabi one weekday evening after work, and found Wasabi measures up to both her and my own, sushi standards. On top of the good sushi, Wasabi carries an excellent white wine list which is offered, considerately, by the glass. In the summer, Wasabi has a great, long outdoor patio which offers privacy form the street with high, dark iron fencing. Two riesling and chardonnay glasses later, we had both had our fill of the california roll sushi, complete with cucumber, avocado, and those little orange fish eggs I never remember the name of. It's not so much the kind of sushi Wasabi offers (the selection seems to be to a large extent duplicated regardless of where you go) but the quality. I found all ingredients quite fresh and flavorful, and the rice and seaweed wrapped expertly and cooked by someone who knew how. I would definitely go back to this place if I had a Japanese food or sushi craving, and its location in the trendy Ottawa market area offers an oasis to an otherwise somewhat loud summer night scene.
