June 2008 - Saigon Pho is a aesthetically Western looking restaurant which recently opend on Ottawa’s central Bank St. Unlike its Somerset cousins, Saigon Pho stands outside of the chinatown lineup of Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Vietnamese Asian restaurants and therefore appeals to a more centralized business crowd. With reasonable prices and an amazing selection of, albeit, sugared fruit shakes, Saigon Pho is a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of downtown Ottawa: though you have to walk a few blocks South of Laurier to find it. I wanted to check out their pho (Vietnamese soup) to see how it compared to the Pho of Chinatown. I was impressed with the presentation: a small portion comes in a huge bowl (the large takes up half a small table and looks more like a washbasin than a bowl) with homemade fried tofu, vermicelli egg-style noodles (flat as opposed to skinny) and freshly steamed vegetables in a vegetarian broth (some restaurants on Somerset offer vegetarian broth but put the vegetarian ingredients in a meat based broth). The side accompaniments were what really make this meal a treat: pleasantly displayed on a long, asian plate, the whole small red chili, bean sprouts and sprig of basil were there for my use and pleasure. Side condiments on the table include: hoisin sauce, soy sauce, and hot pepper sauce. The pho soup was interestingly complimented by a mango-banana fruit shake. My friend ordered a more exotic taro shake - a lovely violet shade made from the Asian taro fruit, which tastes divine when combined with ice cream Decadent.
