| "Mexican Food, North American style" |

by Jessica (from Ottawa) April 2008 - I sat on a patio in early April with a good friend of mine, amazed that a few short weeks ago, Ottawa had been buried in mountains of snow. It had been a particularly rough winter, and so this abnormally hot day for an Ottawa Spring brought out everyone from their homes and onto the nearest patios. One of these was Feleena’s, a standard seeming Mexican restaurant that we chose more for the patio than the food. I ordered a Californian wrap, while my friend had the hearvo rancheros (I may be butchering the name, but it’s a mexican/brunch conglomerate of fried beans, salsa and eggs). Both our meals were decent, and reasonably priced, though there was nothing special about them. We arrived in the nick of time as only a few short moments later, the patio was packed with customers, and another friend, who joined us later, never did get her modest request for a cranberry juice. The sangria we shared was disappointing: a somewhat flat combination of bar wine with a bit of juice and flat soda water added. While there was some fruit floating about in the pitcher, its the kind of festive beverage one would like to enjoy with friends in laughter and pleasure, not meant to be the topic of critique in the conversation. Regardless of some minor let downs, Feleens'a seems like a solid restaurant to get standard Mexican food: just don't expect the real thing.
