June 2007 - Great news fellow Maritimers. I found what you would call a 90 per cent Halifax donair.
It is so close to as donair from back home you won't believe it.
Someone mentioned a pub named Hooley's on Elgin Street, so I checked it out Sunday night. They even bill it as a "Halifax Donair" on their menu.
So I ordered one and naturally had a pint of Alexander Keith's Amber Ale.
The homemade shell is not quite the same texture as a heavy pita. And they don't grill it with a touch of water to heat and soften it. But after that, the rest is terrific.
The meat was very good, the right amount of cayenne pepper, etc. The sauce also was an excellent combination of the sweetened condensed milk and vinegar for that tangy flavour.
Bottom line: Highly recommended.
This would be a great place for Maritimers to meet up for a pint.
