"Beaches Bistro Misses the Mark"

by Michael (from Ottawa, Ontario)
March 2009 - This fairly new Beaches bistro is located just off of Queen Street East, a long time haven for eateries ranging from fine dining to take-out. The Bistro concept has become a rarer sight in the neighborhood, especially in the section closer to Woodbine Ave. The decor is quite lovely. The owners completely renovated one of the area's cottage-like homes and given it a warm yet stylish make over. On this rainy Tuesday night, we were the 3rd and final table to be seated. A two man operation (one chef, one server) was quite fast and up for the task. The server was courteous and kind, albeit a little awkward. The chef was quite nice and offered us hors d'oerves and came to apologize to my mom when she sent back her steak (he admitted that it wasn't even on the same planet as medium-rare...yeah, we noticed when her plate was full with blood. Not a great impression to leave a customer!). The appetizer salads were modestly priced but a little skimpy on the actual greens. This was a serving for a super model not the average hungry patron.
The mains were quite nice. My lamb stew was flavourful, well priced and served in a most delicious broth that was the absolute perfect consistency. My mom's flank steak however was a disappointment. Being a flank cut and all, we can't expect much, but as I mentioned earlier, her request for medium-rare came back to her as barely seared.
The desert was quite nice but nothing new. Chocolate torte, creme brulee and apple strudel...this kind of selection was quite boring to be honest. And that's just it. The prices are decent, the food o.k. and that's what I was left with....an experience that was ok. It takes more than just mediocrity to last in this business, especially in the Beaches.
