| "Famous for a Reason" |

by Jeannine (from Calgary) August 2007 - Nates has become a bit of a following among locals. The restaurant has been there for many years and serves up kosher Jewish treats, there mainstay being the Smoked meat sandwhich. The restuarant itself is in a small, unassuming spot on Elgin Street and doesn't look like much from the outside. From the inside it doesn't look like much either - an old diner-style building, complete with old vintage posters from the 70's; you can imagine that Nates looks the same now as it did years ago. And the food tastes as much also. Guests can choose to stay and eat or choose from a wide selection of food from the counter-style store in the front, including a whole brisket to bring home and serve for a large gathering. We decided to stay in and had to try there famous smoked meat sandwhich, which was offered in regular size with a side of fries, coleslaw and a kosher pickle, or a larger size which offered a little more of each. When the food came it was evident why they are famous. I can't pretend to be a smoked meat connaisseur, but this sandwich tasted like something that was made from an old family recipe.
