September 2007 - At the Buffett Monimahal (aka Moti Mahal), two can dine for less than $40 on “over 100 items served.” The food is hot and plenty and there’s no waiting. However, you get what you pay for. The tarka dal was so salty. The sag paneer was so buttery. The sag and lamb tasted too much like vinegar. The kabuli chana was just weird. The jalebi and much of the rice was dried out.
The good news: the kir (rice pudding) was great. The bindi (okra) was just right. There was plenty of roti.
The downtown building at 164 Laurier has not fared well after the passage of time and the many previous incarnations at this location. Please be careful walking down the slippery back stairs to the washrooms.
On this evening during Ramadan, the restaurant was full. I usually eat this much food when dining South Asian and pay twice the price. Next time, I’ll spend the extra money.
