| "A little bit of Europe in Ottawa" |
|
|
by Jessica (from Ottawa) September 2007 - Europe is full of these inside/outside food markets/restaurants: where there are removable walls to turn the restaurant into an outside cafe. It's refreshing to find one in the midst of Ottawa's market district. Ottawa isn't the pinnacle of vibrant culture, so when you find it, you appreciate it. Not that the Byward's Cafe is a stellar example of strong cultural identity, but it feels European - like you're briefly in France. Its open wall concept - where the most 'inside' you get is under some awning with poles - is lovely. I had a four salad plate for $7.50 - which included two pasta selections, a bean salad and a greek - which proved to be too much food for me (and I eat alot!) My friend had the more modest $5.50 salad plate, which, if ordering again, I would get. We both had Orangina's - a European staple - and some overpriced chocolate chip cookies, which were none the less appreciated given the ambience. We came here after a Take Back the Night rally, and the young woman at the counter commented she would have loved to have joined us as she handed me a mediocre decaf coffee to go.
