October 2007 - Saigon restaurant, true to its namesake, is a modern looking Vietnamese restaurant in the heart of Ottawa's Byway market restaurant district. Busy upon entrance, my mother and I found a spot at the back of the restaurant where we were quickly forgotten about. After approaching the young waitress and kindly pointing out others who had arrived after us were being served before us, the service was prompt and efficient.
I ordered the Vietnamese staple noodle dish: vermicelli - vegetarian style, complete with tofu and veggies. My mother had vermicelli with shrimp and veggies. They were both good, though a little oily, and this wasn't a surprise. There's something about Vietnamese food flavouring - cilantro and mint - perhaps the fish sauce- that is refreshing and nourishing at the same time. It is also frequently oily in North American renditions of its food, although I've been to Vietnam and that is not the case there. It seems only when you're willing to pay for Vietnamese fine dining that you're able to get away from oil. Saigon Restaurant is a middle-range restaurant where you're partially paying for atmosphere and location as much as you are for the food.
