November 2007 - The Delikat Cafe is hidden in a little nook on downtown Ottawa's pedestrian mall, 277 Sparks Street. Each day for lunch, the Delikat offers more than five special meals featuring items such as submarine sandwiches, donairs and lentils. In addition to the specials, the cafe has an extensive menu board and offers catering.
Today's special was Mexican quesadillas with rice and salad. Accompanying the Greek salad (filled with carrots and tomatoes) was a salsa style dressing, heavy on the tomato sauce. The salsa dressing worked well with that particular salad. The rice was warm, brown and included its own extras like carrots and lentils. While the meal was based on only one thin cheese-filled quesadilla, the whole meal provided more than enough food for lunch.
The Delikat is a busy restaurant and convenience store. I was the only diner to eat in the restaurant for my off-hours meal. Nevertheless, there was a continuous stream of customers seeking both convenience-store items and take-away meals. The place was well equipped for a lunch hour rush with fifteen tables and a window bar fitted with stools.
Don't wait too late to eat at the Delikat, the place closes at 5:30 pm.
