November 2007 - This outlet of Marcello's Market and Deli is located on the bottom level of the building complex at 240 Sparks. This is a prime location for downtown Ottawa's busy lunch crowd.
Marcello's specialises in coffees, salads and sandwiches. Today I chose a soup and sandwich meal. The meal is the same price for all soups and/or sandwiches. The selection of sandwiches is great: steak, hearty egg, flaky tuna, seafood and crab, veggie, summer veggie, roast beef, smoked meat, smoked turkey and grilled chicken breast. The selection of breads for your sandwich is even better and every sandwich can be toasted: multi-grain, kaiser, baguette, white, rye, pumpernickel, whole wheat, egg bread, California veggie, garden tomato, Mediterranean pesto and pita. Apparently, most patrons choose the pita.
The soup selection isn't so great. Being a bit late for lunch, I got the last soup of the day: a vegetable soup based on couscous. Being the last bowl, I got lots of food in my broth. I requested a roast beef sandwich but I was too late and a smoked meat was recommended. Having recently encountered rye bread that was too thick and soft for my tastes, I chose pumpernickel. It was nice to have the mustard slathered all over the bread instead of just squirted.
There wasn't much meat in the sandwich but the lettuce and tomato filled it out nicely.
