by David (from Orléans) November 2007 - I visited the Indian Biriyani House on Bank Street hoping to experience a biriyani like I once enjoyed along the highway rest stops of South Asia: a huge plate of fluffy basmati rice, with large chunks of meat and oh so many sultana raisins. I didn’t get what I hoped for. The rice in the Kashmiri biriyani at the IBH was small grain and gray. The chunks of lamb were fine. The sliced almond and dried fruit (mango, pineapple, apricot and raisin) came in tiny pieces and likely came out of a bag.
However, as a whole the meal was great. We ordered the chicken dhansak extra hot and it was, though the sweet tamarind flavour was hard to detect. The curry from the dhansak went well on my biriyani. The alu sag (potato and spinach) was tasty. The roti was nice and resembled paratha.
Service was good. Our server was training new staff without incident. Upon seating we were brought three giant papadam.
Beware: the journey to the bathrooms through the unfinished basement is scary.
There is a buffet on Tuesdays and Fridays.
