November 2007 - The Black Tomato looks like a real diamond in the rough upon first glance. Like a true tavern, the old stone walls create a feeling of establishment and age, as though it harkens back to another time when people were heartier. The hostess and waitstaff, along withe clientele, paint a different picture. Sleak and slightly-upscale, at the Black Tomato the cordial hostess takes your name, asks if you will be having drinks or food, and kindly informs you there will be a half hour wait for a table, and suggests waiting at the bar.
My friend and I did wait at the bar, and were quickly (much sooner than half an hour) given a four person table in the centre of the restaurant - to our surprise. After ordering a local draft from the Black Tomato's extensive collection, we both ordered a traditional roasted butternut squash soup. For my main, I tried the portobello mushroom and roasted red pepper vegetable stack - marinated in balsamic vinegar. While not very original, it was well prepared and executed. Unfortunately, our meal was not nearly as pleasant as it could have been, as our waiter was so superficial it was scary. As my friend simply put it - "there's a line, and he's crossed it." My interpretation was that he had a cocaine habit. When, at the end of the meal, he asked us to finish our conversation at the bar so that he could give our table to people waiting in line - we simply left to avoid further interaction with him. Needless to say, I might think twice of going back to what seemed like an otherwise charming little tavern in the restaurant district of Ottawa.
