December 2007 - Basmati Rice is a little funny. Indian food in a western-style diner setting, Basmati Rice makes an attempt at sit-down dining with cafeteria style tables and chairs, and a vase with a flower on each table. Florescent, back-lit photos advertising the Indian dishes offered adorn the overhanging, above the service counter at Basmati Rice, and most customers walk in and out for takeout on their way home from work. We actually had a sit-down meal at Basmati, and received wonderful, attentive service.
I ordered the butter chicken dish, along with one of my friends, while our third friend ordered soong paneer - a spinach and chickpea curry dish. My butter chicken was cheap ($7.95), and the rubbery quality of the chicken, along with its somewhat tasteless sauce, reflected its price. Our appetizers were the wild and fun part. We ordered a curry-poutine - consisting of Indian curry, cheese curds, gravy and wild mushrooms, which was both delicious and a suspicious combination! We also sampled a butter nut squash soup - uncommon for an Indian restaurant which proved worth its name. The wait staff chatted us up, smiling the entire visit, and asked that we please come again. We were given a voucher to potentially win an assortment of free food in the New Year, winning, that is, only after being opened by the wait staff at Basmati Rice, after ordering a meal. I liked the people that own this place so much, I would definitely come back again.
