November 2007 - Green Door Restaurant is one of these vegetarian restaurants with a cafeteria-style layout of food for the clientele to select from. Beginning with your plastic tray, glass dishware and cutlery, the Green Door starts off its vegetarian feast with hot dishes. Two soups of the day begin the choices: the day I was there there was potato-leek and tomato basil. Varying both daily, weekly, and seasonally, there's a selection of moussaka, lasagna, curries, and steamed veggies, amongst others. Continuing on, there is a selection of salads - ranging from hearty sliced avocados and tomatoes, to wild rice and cranberry salads, to triple bean. Finally,a choice of decadent and healthier vegan and vegetarian desserts await the sweet toothed.
My lunch plate was filled with avocado salad, fresh greens, steamed vegetables with my choice of oriental dressing, and carob-mint cookies. I also had the Green Door's home-brewed chai tea - which sits and becomes more and more infused with spices as the day passes by. The total cost of this lunch? $14.00 - which is neither good nor bad. Vegetarian "fast" or "to go" style restaurants seem pricey, but when you look at the fresh and often organic vegetables you're eating, not to mention the labor that goes into preparing sauces, cutting up vegetables, and preparing them, I can't complain about the value of the meal. The Green Door staff seems quite nice - usually serene and agreeable. The large seating area usually allows for plenty of personal space, however the Green Door is quite popular amongst the veggie community, and can be quite busy on weekends.
