November 2007 - Memories, located in Ottawa's trendy Byward market, is a great little secret for weekend evenings and nights when you just don't feel like being at a club or a bar. Memories seems like a cafe, but is open much later (especially for Ottawa night standards). It boasts a menu of cup or bowl hot drinks, decadent desserts and an assortment of soups and deli items to choose from. My friend and I both ordered bowls of chocolat chaud, or, hot chocolate, complete with traditional whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. So completely done right the old-fashioned way. We both shared a piece of three-layer carrot cake, very sweet and appetizing despite being synthetic, as well as bowls of "gypsy stew" - a chickpea and tomato vegetable blend which was excellent.
At Memories, there is a table service all night, and the friendly servers bring club goers and bar hoppers, dropping over in between new destinations, excellent and friendly service, despite the relatively low tips they receive for working at what many perceive to be a coffee house and nothing more - which is too bad.
