| "Office hour lunch" |
by Jessica (from Ottawa) November 2007 - Cafe Saffron is a quiet, unobtrusive eatery located in downtown Ottawa that suddenly turns frenetic over the business lunch hour as Ottawa's corporate and professional pile in for a quick, Asian lunch. Lining up with my tray in a suddenly built up line, I chose from a selection of about eight main dishes, including beef satay and chicken pad thai. After selecting two very similar vegetable selections, one of which actually contained pork because there really was only one vegetarian dish, I was asked if I wanted a spring roll, to which I said no. Upon hearing they re complimentary with the meal, I graciously accepted. For $8.95 the small plastic container of vegetables and pork over steamed white rice that I received, should have definitely come with a "complimentary" extra.
Sitting down with my friend at a tiny two person table, sculpted into the restaurant's only half-booth area, somewhat hidden from the crowdedness of the place, we got the impression the place was designed to sit down, eat, and go. Given its location, this really couldn't be too surprising. Having said this, the service staff were very friendly and polite, and the office workers themselves, congenial to the conditions of the hour long lunch they all had to share. Cafe Saffron is the kind of place that you come to for efficiency and location rather than atmosphere or a long, sensuous evening meal.
