"Good Downtown Pub"

by Brandy (from Dartmouth)
December 2007 - Part of the Bay Street Bistro located at 160 Bay Street, the Black Bear pub is an interesting Scottish establishment. Near the National Archives and situated amongst several downtown hotels, the pub is frequented by out-of-town businessmen and local political insiders. There is a main seating area of small tables with good views of sporting events displayed on several overhead television sets. An alcove with seats for about fifteen people does not have a good view of the televisions but it provides a cozier atmosphere. The wait staff was prompt and managed to take an order for ten people without any mistakes and provide separate bills without any hassle. The beverage selection was very reasonable and they even had Strongbow Cider on tap. The menu contained all the standard pub fare but included several uncommon and unique selections. There were a couple enticing curried chicken dishes and something called “hotch potch.” I chose the “hotch potch” and was not disappointed. It was a spicy lamb dish served on a bed of rice. It was very good but could have used some more sauce. Rolls for everyone were complimentary at the beginning of the dinner. Most of the steak dinners included all you could eat salad at the salad bar. There were no complaints from the group about the food and several compliments. Many of the dishes, including the “hotch potch,” cost less than $10 while the steak dinners with salad were about $20. Drinks were about $5 each. The Black Bear has a nice atmosphere and is probably one of the better eating establishments in the area. If you are ever staying on the West side of downtown Ottawa, I recommend frequenting the Black Bear pub.
