December 2007 - Carmello’s Italian Restaurant at 300 Sparks Street is a decent late-night restaurant on the West side of downtown Ottawa. Reservations were required as we were a group of about fifteen. Even though it was a weeknight there were not many empty tables so I would recommend reservations for a group of any size. The menu is quite extensive with an array of pasta dishes. The pasta noodles are fresh made daily but not in-house. The menu is so extensive that it took everyone a long time to decide what to order. I finally decided on the Perfetta: a thin pasta dish with sun-dried tomatoes and feta cheese. Before dinner arrived, the table was supplied with a large amount of sliced bread and oil and vinegar for dipping. The bread was fantastic and most people unintentionally filled up on the bread. When my meal finally arrived it was visually appealing but missed a kick of something in taste. It was well made but almost tasted bland, something I have never experienced before when either sun-dried tomatoes or feta cheese is present. Others also noted that their choices missed something in the taste department. Most pasta dishes ranged in price from $13 to $20. Overall, this is a difficult recommendation to call. The atmosphere, service, price, and bread were all fantastic. The food was just surprisingly bland.
