by David (from Orleans) May 2008 - I was wrong to assume that it would be easy to find a restaurant on the historic main street (King) of downtown Brockville. After walking for too long in the rain and passing too many closed or out-of-business restaurants, I settled for the Phoenix Eatery and Bar.
The Phoenix has been operating since 1971 and has not aged well. This darkly lit restaurant with dark decor is old school. Apparently, patrons seat themselves. Even so, the service was good.
I can't remember the last time I was asked "will that be a large or small Coke?" The specials today were cabbage rolls, BBQ pork chops or chicken stir fry. The specials came with coffee and dessert.
I ordered a reuben sandwich (smoked meat, nicely melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and 1000 islands) with fries (largely a collection of not-so-edible fry fragments). The platter was accompanied by a small dish of cole slaw and tiny piece of pickle. After nearly spitting out the pickle slice, I did not dare the slaw.
The bar maintains a web site which informs patrons about upcoming live entertainment.
