by Brandy (from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) July 2007 - The Toucan & Kirkpatrick’s Pub is a Kingston landmark and institution. Both Royal Military College of Canada and Queens University students, and local residents frequent it. Although it is an Irish pub it is not as rowdy or loud as most. The smaller spaces and tight tables create a cozier atmosphere that is to the Toucan’s credit. It’s menu features all the typical Irish pub fare. The nachos come in three sizes and are a must. They even go on special on Wednesdays. The wings are good but not great and go on special Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. Frequented on countless occasions, my first visit occurred in 1996 and the most recent occured in July 2007: the food and the nostalgic atmosphere is still fantastic. Don’t miss the Sunday brunch special for only $2.49. It’s just standard fare but it feels great after a late Saturday night! The Toucan is located on the bustling Princess Street in the heart of Kingston and is great for people watching. During the summer months the patio is available but is situated in an uninviting alley location. The service staff is usually very attentive and the prices are very reasonable. The best time to visit the Toucan is during the evening period when it’s just a little bit crowded. Like most other Irish pubs, the Toucan is most inviting when there’s lots of people around.
