March 2008 - Cafe Santropol has been consistently the same for the past eight years. Its narrow pathway leads its customers in one of two directions: to the front sitting area reminiscent of a dining train, or, to the larger, more open back room which leads onto a spectacular, spacious backyard terrace - complete with goldfish pond in the summer. Its open kitchen serves a late-night snack eater's delight: a series of sandwiches with sweet and savoury combinations. The sandwiches are all based on a thick, homemade bread - i think molasses, usually with some cream cheese, and then a series of other meats or veggies with a chutney or jammy kind of sweet spread. The sandwiches are also huge.
I opted for a mushroom and cheese quiche (it was a cold day in March) with a house salad. Both yummy though strangely not satisfying for a hearty appetite such as mine. My friend ordered the chili, which, rather than the conventional bowl, was served in a mini "trough" style dish with corn chips strategically inserted on top. My friend couldn't finish her chili, so I did. It was delicious and definitely the hearty satisfaction I was seeking. We both ordered decaf expressos which, thank goodness for Montreal's European loyalties, actually tasted great, along with a chocolate cake to share. Our server ended up bringing us a carrot cake which, once he'd realized what he'd done, pleadingly said "It's still good though, better than the chocolate even." My friend and I were open-minded that night, and so ate the carrot cake. Delicious and definitely the right size for two. Cafe Santropol is the restaurant portion of a larger organization providing meals to seniors called: "Santropol Roulant," or, meals on wheels. Rest assured, you're supporting a good cause.
