| "Image Change, but still the same" |

by Jessica (from Ottawa) March 2008 - Aux Vivres, formerly known as Les Vivres, has undergone an image and location change. Back in the days of back alley hippie secrecy, Les Vivres was an underground hit. Upon entering its inconspicuous doors, one was struck by the laid back, grass-roots feel of the vegan restaurant - from its diner style counter upon entering, to its crooked doorways and tables, along with amateur oil paintings and open kitchen chatter over Bob Marley tunes. Its menu was excellent. From melt in your mouth mouth-watering chippatis, to delicious full meal salads, to a series of vegetable rice bowls with tahini sauces, Aux Vivres was a treat for anyone on the herbivore to carnivore spectrum. Upon visiting its, by contrast, quite sleek, modern-day younger sister, I was curious to know "had the food changed?" With a fifteen minute line-up and jam packed restaurant I wondered - they must be doing something right still... After being seated, I realized it was almost the identical menu to the one I had read in the days of back-alley relaxation. The atmosphere had just been refreshingly modernized, the service professionalized (i.e., faster and better), and the tables and food a touch more hygenic I would imagine than in the past. I ordered the "dragon bowl," a vegetable dish with a tahini base sauce I have to be able to replicate - one of a kind and definitely worth the trip to sample. The rice bowl was very filling and came to around $10, maybe a dollar or two more than in the past but, given the improvement in surroundings, worth the increase. The only drawback about this place is you can't order wine - I suppose part of the whole "health" atmosphere being emphasized... nonetheless, a bottle between friends would have been nice.
