March 2008 - Boite Gourmande is quite a spacious cafe - light floods in from two of its four generous wall expanses - illuminating the service and sitting area with heaps of illumination quite refreshing at any time of day - especially in the darkness of the end of a Montreal winter. We ordered a thin-crust oven baked pizza with ham and cheese, its artichokes and tomatoes poking out from under the drizzled mozzarella. It ended up being a modest lunch for two. The root vegetable soup was perfect for a cold winter day, as were the caffeinated beverages we followed our lunch with - done with the quality typical of a professional barista who knows how to use a real expresso machine.
A friendly place to stop in in a lower income, though artistic and lively, part of Montreal, I wouldn't recommend this place for dinner. I don't even know if it's open in the evenings - it seems best to come in the morning and at lunch and, at these times, the service is done with a smile (or even kissing as one of the service staff and her partner demonstrated behind what perhaps they thought was a wall of restaurant equipment).
