August 2007 - Staying at a hotel a couple of doors down, I walked past Aqua Sushi several times. New and fresh looking, I was always curious as to why it was so empty, why I had never seen anyone in there but for a very bored looking sushi chef. Despite the fact that there were several sushi restaurants within a three block radius, I decided to give this restaurant, located at 364 Sherbrooke Ouest, a try.
The lack of tables and the only menu being a paper brochure, I realized that Aqua Sushi was primarily a take-out restaurant, explaining why I had never seen anyone here. There was a cooler with ready-made sushi packs too for those who couldn’t wait for their sushi to be prepared. I had the luxury of time so I made a meal of it and stayed.
My miso soup was good, nothing special but good. And I had a couple of their special rolls. One was called Rouleau Aqua, and it consisted of spicy tuna on the inside, and avocado and then either tuna or salmon on the outside (each piece interchanged with what was on the outside). I also had a Rainbow roll, which was an inside-out roll that consisted of tempura scallop. Simply, it was divine. All this did not come cheap. With two other single nigiri sushi my bill came to $29.63. It was well worth it though for the freshness, variety and good taste.
The décor here is simple and sparse, with modern chairs and tables and a white and light blue colour scheme. And while I sat and ate, quite a few regulars came in to pick up their orders, the repeat customers suggesting their quality consistency, as well as their focus as a take-out service. There was no alcohol on the menu either. They are closed on Sundays. Monday to Friday they are open from 11-9 and Saturdays from 4-9.
