by Alison (from Calgary) August 2007 - There are no shortages of places to get breakfast on Sherbrooke Street. Coffee houses abound, each offering the essential petit dejeuner, usually bagels and/or croissants with egg, meat and cheese. But if you are looking for something more for breakfast, Deli 500 is the place to go for all your traditional breakfast favourites.
Located near several major hotel chains and office towers, Deli 500 is ideally located on the bottom floor of an office tower between Van Houte coffee and a Tim Horton’s a few doors down. Being a lazy Saturday afternoon, we decided to stop here for breakfast as it was close to our hotel. There’s nothing fancy about Deli 500. It can best be compared to Denny’s to Smitty’s, and in that same tradition, breakfast is available all day. Sitting is mainly in boothes, though there is a separate lounge area. The colours were rich mahagonies and deep greens, giving this restaurant a classier look than its other breakfast counterparts.
The menu was varied and offered what you would expect from such a restaurant: burgers, salads, wraps, sandwiches, and the random entrée. Most unusual for such a restaurant was the presence of Greek inspired dishes, such as gyros. This makes me think that Deli 500 is not a chain restaurant and run by a Greek family otherwise I can’t see why gyros would be on there. Someone near us was eating a said gyro and it looked delicious. My husband ordered the classic breakfast ($7.95), which consisted of the regular two eggs (any way you’d like them) two sausages, fried potatoes and toast. I had a spinach and cheese omelette ($8.95) and it came with toast and fried potatoes as well. My omelette was far from the best omelette I’ve ever eaten but it was also far from the worst. It was only average. The outside of it was a bit crispy, more than I would have liked. And the potatoes didn’t have any special pizazz to them. My husband’s were standard and he enjoyed them. We had ordered coffee, and they brought a carafe to our table so we had non-stop coffee without having to ask for refills, which was a nice bonus. However, the coffee wasn’t hot, only warm. We didn’t bother asking for different coffee, though the service was excellent and efficient and I am sure they would have complied without any attitude.
All in all, it was a good experience but I think it was pricey for what we had received. Though location may have accounted for the higher prices, I decided to stick the petit dejeuner at the many coffee houses, a breakfast that consisted of coffee for always under $5.
