"Cheap eats!"

by Alison (from Calgary)
August 2007 - Located at 1011 Boulevard St.Laurent, Pho Cali is on a side street within Montreal’s Chinatown. There are quite a few Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown, and by the looks of things, all of them are very popular, packed with people. I chose Pho Cali because it wasn’t busy because I would be assured a table. It also wasn’t the most attractive restaurant. While some of the others looked modern, this restaurant was not. It had that kind of cheesy mural décor in blues and sand colours meant to replicate the beaches of Vietnam I suppose.

The place seemed very clean and bright for all that it lacked in tasteful décor. The menu, printed in Chinese, English and French, and possibly also in Vietnamese, had a good selection of vermicelli, rice dishes, and soups. I couldn’t decide between vermicelli and soup and eventually ordered vermicelli with barbecue pork and spring rolls. It came fast, hot and fresh in a serving size that I couldn’t finish. It was good. It wasn’t the best I’d ever had, but it was good. And it was cheap at only $7.

The service was efficient and friendly, and my meal included some of the best tea I’ve had in a Vietnamese restaurant. For as long as it steeped, it never became bitter. The longer I was there, the busier it became. It was evident that it was only quiet when I entered because it was in a lull period. I don’t know if I’d go back only because there were so many others to try, and it wasn’t exactly outstanding. But I left feeling satisfied.
