August 2007 - Attached to the Four Points hotel at 475 Sherbrooke Street West, Presse Café was a good little find. Modern with wood trim, this café is larger than what first meets the eye, with a back loft-like area. A larger deli-case is used to separate the coffee and the kitchen from the seating area, and it is also used to display pre-made sandwiches, wraps, and some baked goods. I stopped here for breakfast, and like many coffee houses in the area, they offered the obligatory petit dejeuner consisting of bagels with egg and cheese, or croissants with the same. Different from most cafes in the area, Presse Café offers omelettes as well. I ordered a spinach and cheese omelette, but they were out of spinach--a point that the chef was very apologetic about. I had mushrooms instead. I also ordered a large latte, which ended up being gigantic in size. I found that cafes in Montreal varied in their sizes so it is best to ask to see the size before ordering. The coffee cup had something written on it that it was the best latte in Montreal and that once you have one that you’d always come back. Had it not been my last morning in Montreal, I would have been back. It was rich and creamy and strong. And the large lasted me well-over an hour! This and the omelette cost me only $5.75 if you can believe it.

My omelette took a few minutes to cook, but was very fast considering it was an omelette. It came with toast and fried potatoes, the latter seasoned and spiced giving them extra pizzazz first thing in the morning. The omelette was cooked well and wasn’t too large (for me was a good thing but maybe not enough if you are very hungry). I was disappointed that the mushrooms were from a can, not fresh mushrooms, which in my opinion are not mushrooms.

Now being called the Presse Café, you may expect there to be a lot of newspapers floating around. Well there weren’t. There was a rack where newspapers would be and two papers where there. I don’t know if people had taken papers or what. There was also a counter that had about two hundred magazines piled up. And there was also free highspeed Internet if you brought your own computer. The staff was friendly and efficient and I would recommend this place to anyone.
