July 2006 - Our 1st anniversary celebration in Quebec wa for too short, but Villa Montcalm made it truly lovely. What a beautiful home and delicious breakfasts. A perfect place to stay while exploring such an enchanting city.

"Never again!"

August 2005 - I travelled across Eastern Canada in summer 2005, and stayed here for 2 nights. Out of all the B&Bs where I stayed, this was my worst experience. I would never stay here again.

Admittedly, the B&B is on a quiet street, in a nice neighborhood.

The hostess, however, was very challenging, and the cause of all our discomfort while there. She seemed to be more interested in her pet bird than her guests. Her interest in her guests seemed limited to the money they would pay her.

When we reserved via email, she made it clear that we only had a 2 hour window that day to arrive, otherwise she would be out, and couldn't be bothered to take our business.

When we did arrive during her "window", she immediately demanded that we pay her in cash, before allowing us to enter our room.

I am a native English speaker, and my partner a native French speaker. The hostess refused to speak to me in English, or to answer any of my questions that I put in English. It was made very clear from the start that she would only communicate in French.

After checking in, we unpacked, locked the room door, and then went out for the day. When we came back, we discovered the hostess had unlocked our door, and left it completely open the entire day. Fortunately, nothing was missing, but all our belongings were out, and any of the other guests (or the hostess herself) could have gone through our things at their leisure.

Breakfast was a meagre affair, despite her claims of it being "stupendous". To be honest, it was the smallest breakfast we had during our month in Canada -- two tiny pancakes, a small cup of coffee, and maybe 3 ounces of orange juice; accompanied by the constant shrieking of her pet bird.

There are plenty of other B&Bs in Quebec, so I will stay at one of them next time.

Management Response:
by Lyse
Dear Madam: Really sorry you didn't enjoy your stay but sincerely, most of the information you wrote is wrong, according to other guests. About payment, I only reminded you how to pay "on your last day". I do myself the breakfast with great attention and fresh products, with at least a choice of two hot plates, and of course, juice and coffee as much as people like. I speak French and English and some Spanish, wherever the guests prefer it.
