"We Will Rock You-The Queen of all Musicals"
by Emilie (from Calgary)
July 2008 - On our annual trip to the UK to visit family, my sister and I decided that a girly excursion to the capital was needed. We hit the streets of London just the two of us for the first time, and had our choice of activities. We were able to get a deal on two tickets to the West End musical 'We Will Rock You'. The show features a compilation of hits by Queen, sequenced together to create a storyline that fits the song lyrics. We expected an Abba-like Mama Mia creation, but as avid Queen fans, knew we would enjoy it regardless. Five minutes in proved that it would surpass any expectations we had. The story line was much less flimsy than that of similar predecessors, and the talent of the performers was extraordinary. As someone who has been involved with musical theatre for most of my life, I naturally hold quite high expectations. This show rose above and beyond all of them, because it was more of a rock concert than a typical West End show. It helped that virtually the entire audience knew all the songs by heart, so the enthusiasm was through the roof. Combine that with the fact that this show was the closest any of us would ever get to attending a Queen show, meant that by the end everyone was on their feet rocking the classic 'We Will Rock You' with the cast. Not a typical scene for a ritzy London theatre. The whole experience left me thinking that Freddie Mercury was somehow in the building that night, nodding his approval, and that is the highest praise I could give.
