| "Where what goes down, must come up!" |
by Becky (from Bozeman) June 2005 - For anyone who likes to do some hiking and has their own camping gear, a hike to the Colorado River in the bottom of the Grand Canyon is a brilliant way to experience the canyon - the views are amazing, the flora surprisingly vibrant and the perspective from the bottom dramatically changed.
Back country permits are required - we went in June when it isn't yet completely hot or heaving with tourists and getting the permit only involved showing up to the office early in the day to get a permit for a couple of days later. We opted for the common route of descending via the South Kaibab Trail (shorter, steeper, not much water along the way so you need to carry enough for the entire day) and climbing out via the Bright Angel Trail (longer, but more gradual and water along the way). We stayed two nights at the Bright Angel campground along the Colorado River and thoroughly enjoyed having a full day to at the bottom before the gigantic climb out.
The bottom of the canyon is a world away from the rim - lush and green in parts and consisting of ravines so deep the greater canyon and the rims are not even visible.
Hiking the canyon from rim to river (and back up!) is highly recommended (but with due care and planning) and completely worth the effort!
