"Beautiful red canyons and ancient Navajo dwellings"
by Rachael (from Beverley, England)
May 2006 - It is hard to put in to words the nature of Canyon de Chelly. A relatively unknown historical site in the northwestern corner of Arizona - the canyon is both a beautiful contrast of vibrant red rock and lush green vegetation in addition to being the home of ancient Native American dwellings. It rained the day we were there but added to the jeep tour that we took into the canyon. We all donned massive army green mackintoshes to drive along the canyon floor and through the river, in true Indiana Jones style. The Cliff dwellings that we saw were well worth the hair-raising drive and the native Navajo who guided us was excellent. We visited all of the major parks and natural monuments of the Southwest on our trip and while they are undeniably spectacular, our side trip to Canyon de Chelly remains a favourite.
