| "A room with a view" |
by Kathy (from Helena, Montana) April 2007 - Despite being one of boatloads of tourists who make their way to this most famous of San Francisco islands, a visit to Alcatraz is still entirely worth it. First, you get a brilliant view of the city from the water and second, you're on your way to visiting one of the world's most famous prisons! As part of the ticket, visitors are provided with audio headsets which guide you around the prison and describe some of its features and more well known residents and when we were there, one of Alcatraz's last inmates was on hand to sign his recently published book. His presence brought the experience described on the headset to life and gave the prison a different perspective. And even though you may be surrounded by hordes of people, an eeriness and loneliness of the island still prevails, particularly when walking around the prison grounds. Whether you find it creepy or weepy, Alcatraz is an interesting place.
