"Best Western of Long Beach"

by David (from Orleans)
January 2008 - We stayed at this lovely hotel en route to a Carnival Pride cruise (which was also awesome!) in January 2008 and would highly recommend it. Maybe it was the relief of escaping Canadian winter but it presented a warm welcome. Not impressive outside but it is recently redecorated with a shiny, clean lobby. The staff was professional and helpful and never made you feel like you were imposing. Special kudos to the van driver who had only moved to Long Beach himself a month earlier and tried so hard to get us where we wanted to go. Just a note of warning that the counter staff did not always have a clear picture of the van's availability so be sure to book it in writing in their binder when you arrive in person and then confirm it before relying on it -- and it doesn't go the airport! (Apparently no permit to do so.) Metro-rail station is directly in front of the hotel -- half-block walk to the door. Our suitcases had wheels so no problem. The van does go to the cruise ship terminal and to nearby shopping areas. There is an authentic Mexican café/bakery right on the corner store. There is a dollar store and Pizza Hut across the street.

The rooms were the usual, clean, mid-price rooms. No surprises. The hotel hallways were quiet at night. There was a complimentary self-serve continental breakfast in a room just off the front door of the lobby . Sufficient selection of the usual, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, fruit and muffins, danishes and mini bagels with real cream cheese (!), tea, juice and coffee -- plus cold boiled eggs for low-carb-ers -- but at times the room was a bit crowded and the toaster a bit too slow to keep up. Breakfast-eaters seemed to come in waves but everything was disposable, able to be carried back to your room.

There is a small heated outdoor pool but we didn't indulge this time. The hotel is close to conference facilities so, on our weekend, we met lots of friendly knitters -- wearing lots of nice sweaters. Apparently there are good packages to cruise-and-park; the van will collect you at the terminal and bring you back for your car after your cruise if you have booked in at the hotel. However, we flew into LAX and so we used the public transit -- a free shuttle to the Green Line (above-ground train), costing $1.25 to the Blue Line and another $1.25 on Blue Line (per person) to the hotel -- sure beats the estimated $50 or $60 for a cab. We got all the info off the Internet before we left Canada and simply asked for the shuttle location once we got outside LAX airport doors. Speaking of Internet -- a free-use computer is found in the hotel lobby and there is free wireless hook-up in the rooms.

We booked online well in advance. A deposit was not required. Two nights, king-size bed, cost $211.66 all in.
