| "Brutal" |
by Gwen (from Canada) March 2007 - I know the staff at LAX are concerned with security and that's perfectly fair but why do they have to be so rude and unhospitable? People from other countries are treated like they have the bubonic plague -- I'm white and Canadian so I can only imagine what it would be like being middle eastern and trying to get through this airport. I'm not saying they have to roll out a red carpet for me, but a bit of a smile goes and a nice greeting goes a long way. Maybe they're abrupt is because they work in one of the dingiest, dirtiest airports in the world. I recently had a 5 hour layover there and was afraid of the bathroom -- it was disgusting. I was in the international terminal and there's not a whole lot there for an airport of this importance -- a couple of restaurants, two shops, that's about it. But maybe the domestic terminal is much nicer?
I came in on a flight from Australia and when we got to customs, there was a line-up for Americans and a line-up for non-Americans. The American line, which was quite short, had about 10 customs agents serving it. The non-American line-up, which was huuuuuuuuge has 2 customs agents. I'm not saying we non-Americans should have more customs agents than the people coming home, but why couldn't they do 6 customs agents for each line? That seems a bit more fair. Then when we had to RE-check our baggage, the guys at the baggage drop-off were standing around making fun of each other. When they finally noticed that I wanted to drop off my baggage, they told me that this one was closed and I would have to find another place to drop off my baggage and I ended up waiting in a 1/2 hour line-up on the other side of the airport. They were also quite unimpressed that I had ruined their fun on the job.
I travel quite a bit and if I have a layover in the states I try my best to avoid having it at LAX ... you should too. There are much nicer airports in the USA.
