by John (from Chino) September 2007 - My girlfriend and I never went to Toro Sushi at its old location. We had never tried sushi and the place didn't look to appealing. Apparently it was a happing place on the weekends and we never knew it. The owners made a good amount of change and moved to its present location.
A friend of mine invited us to Toro Sushi on a Friday night. We formed our first impression outside. The facade to this place is mind blowing. A lot of money, thought, time and love of Sushi went into building this place and it shows. Inside we were just as blow away.
The entrance opens into a bar and this bar was jammed packed. I asked about needing reservations. He said pretty much it is a good idea on Friday and Saturday nights after 7pm but not needed weekdays or during the daytime. While we waiting for our table we ordered drinks from the bar. We didn't get in there until 9pm so it stayed packed for an hour and a half.
Most sushi places are running out of clients by 10:30pm, this place had clients still lined up at the door! We got our table and they apologized for the wait. He brought us Monkey Balls and Poppers to show us how sorry he was. Being our first time ever eating Sushi we let our friend do the ordering.
He started us off with a Super Diablo Roll. He said something about it having lobster dipped in tempura. I don't know what it was, I just know I liked it the best out of everything we ordered. Next we did the Sexy Mexi and the Spicy Tuna Roll. Both were delicious.
The whole time we were also able to watch the Angels on the big screen TVs placed all over the restaurant. Every time an Angel hit one over the wall the place erupted in cheers and offers of Saki. We drank the Saki and quickly realized just how much we were missing without having sushi in our lives. We also realized why Toro Sushi was so popular in the Inland Empire.
We were so impressed with our time at Toro that we have been going back on a weekly basis ever since. Finally a restaurant you can bring your kids to and still have a lot of fun. A place you can come later at night to and bring some friends for a five star night on the town.
In parting I would like to mention that they have opened up their Teppanyaki grills. My girlfriend and I decided to try it out and I ordered the Kobe beef. Wow. It was my third time having Kobe beef and I was very impressed. First, it costed about half of what I had paid for it in the past. Second, it was just as good as the others!
Another difference with Toro is that the Chef was talkative and funny. The Chefs at most Teppanyaki style restaurants usually don't engage the customer at all. They might do some tricks but they never actually converse with you. Ours made the table feel like a party. Which was perfect because the entire Toro Sushi establishment feels like one big party. A perfect way for you to spend you weekend!
