| "Tahoe's Olympic Village" |
by Storm (from Calgary) February 2007 - I went snowboarding at Lake Tahoe last year and spent a couple of different days at Squaw Valley. It is unarguably the largest ski resort in North Lake Tahoe and one of the most well known in the US, having hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics.
The upside - I loved riding at Squaw - its village (albeit somewhat new), high camp and system of lifts are about the closest thing the US gets to European resorts. The terrain was incredible and whatever we were in the mood for, we could find at Squaw, including a lot of areas that looked great but that we didn't get to try. The cable car and funitel are a nice addition and mean that non-skiers can go up the mountain and hang/swim/ice skate at the High Camp while their friends/family are on the slopes.
The downside - it is more expensive than most of the area's resorts and doesn't have nearly as friendly of atmosphere as the others. And, because of its reputation, Squaw can get incredibly busy and full of skiers/riders that are there almost solely because of the image... meaning the shops, the people, the slopes can all seem a bit pretentious.
It is worth going to, but having been, I would recommend a day or two at Squaw and other days at Alpine Meadows just around the bend.
