| "Small, friendly winery" |

April 2007 - When visiting this region last spring, we drove through both Napa and Sonoma Valley but visited wineries in Sonoma as we had read that the valley is less commercial than Napa and the Benziger Family Winery was recommended for its small size, informative tours and friendliness. The winery is family-owned and is a Biodynamic-certified vineyard, the highest level of organic farming. We took a tractor-driven tour and the guide briefly explained the details of this unique farming practice, including pointing out the Insect Garden, an area in which specific plants are planted to draw certain bees, insects and birds necessary for organic farming. The tour also included visiting the complex of underground caves which the winery uses for storage, followed by a wine-tasting session in an intimate yet low-key tasting room. We didn't fully appreciate the friendliness and informative server until we visited other wineries which were somewhat large and indifferent. Definitely recommend Benziger - for a tour, a tasting or just the wine itself!
