"Amazing cliff cities"
by Rachael (from Beverley, England)
May 2006 - When taking a trip around the American Southwest, I was if not prepared then at least expecting the famous red rocks of Monument Valley or the expanse of the Grand Canyon - what I had never heard of before was the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde in the corner of Colorado. These are a must see! Not only are the structures themselves (and there are a lot of them) very well preserved but the settings are stunning. A visit with a tour guide is definitely recommended to actually climb into the canyon and get up close to the ruins but a drive (or cycle) around the rim of the canyon is equally recommended - some of the ruins are located along cliff ledges which seem almost impossible to get to. This is a truly fascinating national park and should not be missed!
