"A True Watering Hole"
7.17
by Robert (from Washington Depot, Ct.)
September 2007 - The term “watering hole” has always had a nice ring to it. A. Joseph’s in Thomaston, Connecticut seems to fit the term very well.

We had been to A. Joseph’s many times in the last 10 years or so, but we recently discovered that we had not enjoyed its best feature. Normally we went there for dinner and found the entres only fair, quite typical for a middle-of-the-road restaurant catering to families and offering relatively inexpensive dining.

Recently, however, we explored something at A. Joseph’s that makes it worthy of the “watering hole” designation in a big way. On Tuesday through Friday afternoons the lounge offers a very nice happy hour from 4:00 - 6:00 PM that gives my wife and I a chance to employ a great strategy. In addition to the normal two drinks for the price of one that you expect during a “happy hour,” A. Joseph’s also puts out a nice spread of munchies to nibble while you down your drinks. Our strategy, and I don’t think it’s a secret to the management, is to use A. Joseph’s generous offerings as an opportunity for a quick little dinner after a day at work.

Actually, I’m retired; but my wife is the principal of an elementary school. Yesterday, she suggested that I meet her at A. Joseph’s for “munchies” after a meeting she had to attend. I arrived at about 5:00 PM and nestled up to the bar for a nice cocktail. She joined me a few minutes later and had a glass of wine while I polished off my second bourbon and ginger ale. All the while we munched on nachos and dip along with about nine or ten sesame chicken wings. On other occasions we have found such fare as Buffalo wings and small pizza slices as the side attractions.

I was exceptionally hungry; so, while the nachos and wings would probably have made a good dinner for most people, I went on to order some calamari with fra diavolo sauce off the menu while my wife had some chicken soup. She ordered another glass of wine and I had one too with the calamari. When our check came, it totaled up to only about $33.00. Not a bad strategy, if you ask me.

A. Joseph’s is certainly not a fancy New England bistro, but it is certainly worth a stop during the week if you want a comfortable situation for not many coins. Again, very close to the definition of a very nice “watering hole.”
