"Let's Get Some Lunch"
6.67
by Robert (from Washington Depot, Ct.)
October 2007 - OK! OK! I admit it. I gained a couple of pounds over the weekend while celebrating my Sox win in the World Series with my wife and son. The diet took some hits and I was in the cautious eating mode as the week started. It was tough though because I was on the road Monday housesitting for my son’s carpet installation. I was hungry when I left his house just after noon.
On the way home I stopped at Rozzi’s Eatery in Thomaston, Ct. Now don’t get the wrong idea, Rozzi’s is more of a diner than it is an elegant eating establishment; but I wasn’t looking for a glass of wine and sumptuous fare. What I was hoping for was a place where I might find something that was satisfying and low in calories. Part of the risk was that, like most fast food joints, Rozzi’s can tend to be a little high on the grease meter. Nevertheless, I need to give them a high grade for variety of offerings and I thought I might find something that would meet my vulnerable needs on this day.
Sure, I saw the usual heavy breakfast dishes and cheeseburgers and fries on the menu, but I also found a bunch of different salads available and that was the direction I chose on this cautious day. I ordered a big (couldn’t finish it) “salad with a scoop.” This really strategic offering included lettuce (a little wilted), cucumbers, raw onions, tomatoes, and a big scoop of chicken salad in the middle. I asked the waitress if they had any light dressing and she suggested a light balsamic vinaigrette that proved to be just what was needed.
The service, by the way, was excellent - two classic diner-type waitresses, one young and bubbly, and the other, old and pleasantly efficient, were always there when I needed them and not there when I just wanted to dig in. The bottom line was a low calorie low cost repast with coffee for $7.37. Sure, I drooled a little when I saw the guy next to me at the counter with the burger and fries and the dessert preparation for other people; but I left there thinking I had done the right thing and that I was back on my diet.
Rozzi’s was nice - nothing super special - but a nice way to satisfy my goals for lunch on this day. I love the way they call it an “eatery.” That’s just the right word, even if most of the eating is only chicken salad and lettuce.
