by Robert (from Washington Depot, Ct.) December 2007 - One of the things that we learned about Florida during our recent post-Christmas getaway to Ft. Myers is that they love to be creative with the names they give restaurants. As we left Saturday afternoon mass, we had already been to the “Mermaid’s Kitchen,” and the next day we would go to a breakfast spot called “First Watch;” but our early Saturday evening spot for dinner was to be my favorite name - the “Prawnshop.” Did you have to look twice like I did? That’s Prawnshop, as in prawns (the large shrimp), not pawn shop as in a place where you try to scrape up some money. Anyway, I like creativity and we certainly wanted to enjoy the fresh seafood that abounds on the west coast of Florida. The mass had started at 4:30, so we rushed into the Prawnshop just before the 5:30 deadline to be eligible for the early bird specials. Now, if the truth be told, we didn’t even know they had early bird specials; but hey, this was Florida, so why not take advantage of that great lure for retirees. Our waitress took a little while to get to us (the place was packed), so we were a little edgy about getting the discount. We informed her that we were seated before 5:30. She was a pro, though, who had worked there for 20 years and assured us in a most friendly manner that, indeed, we qualified. I ordered the chowder to get started (after a couple of cocktails, of course) and it reminded me of our own native New England variety, full of clams and potatoes with a creamy broth that hit the spot, as my dad used to say. As for the main course, I had to go with shrimp. After all, it was the Prawnshop. I had the almond fried shrimp. It was delicious, crunchy and full of seafood flavor. I did feel a little guilty, though; when you are on a diet, the word “fried” makes you feel that way. Nevertheless, I was on vacation and did not want to deny myself a shot at the local color. My wife was a little more judicious. She had the talapia and said that it was very good - more heathy choice and more guilt for me. Ah, I don’t care. The crunchy shrimp were great and so were the non-greasy fries that accompanied them to the table. The decor was very nice - nautical in theme and supportive of the meal. The waitress was even more socialble later in the meal, talking to us about the unusually warm Ft. Myers weather for late December. With a tip for her, and don’t forget the cocktails and wine, our entire bill came to only $43 - a very nice early bird evening.
