by Robert (from Washington Depot, Ct.) December 2007 - Sometimes you can find nice restaurants in places that are a little hard to find. Such was the case when we traveled to southwest Florida after Christmas and happened to find The Mermaid Kitchen & Cake Factory on the road between Sanibel and Captiva Islands just over the causeway from Ft. Myers. We had been to beautiful Sanibel Island before and we were out for a morning drive, revisiting some places and enjoying the scenery. We were headed for Captiva Island on colorfully named Periwinkle Way when we started to get hungry and saw a sign for the Mermaid Kitchen in front of what looked like a small shopping center. It took some driving around in the parking lot to find the restaurant, kind of hidden at the back of a large building; but the search was well worth it. It was pretty early for lunch, but we were hungry and the outdoor tables appealed to our desire to actually eat in the open air a few days after Christmas, something native New Englanders like us seldom have the chance to do. After checking with the kitchen to see if they were ready to serve us, the waitress’s little daughter brought us to our table, a kind of unexpected touch you get when you hit a restaurant just as it is opening. It was really a beautiful setting overlooking a tropical garden in the bright sunshine of a Florida morning in December. We were not looking for anything too heavy at this time of day, but I had been told to try grouper, a fish we don’t normally get to enjoy up north, before we left Florida. I thought I would take the advice and ordered a delicious Caesar salad topped with a generous portion of perfectly grilled grouper. My wife had a Caesar salad too; but she topped hers off with light and crispy crab cakes that were also outstanding. By this time we had shifted to a waiter as our main server, and he was both friendly and knowledgeable about menu items. Actually, he seemed a little disappointed that we were too diet conscious to consider dessert. They take dessert very seriously at The Mermaid Kitchen and that’s why they conclude the name of the their restaurant with the description of “Cake Factory.” Before we could ward him off, the waiter rolled out a cart filled to the top with all kinds of cakes, breads, and pastries. They were absolutely luscious looking, but we were good and pushed him away. Other visitors should take advantage of this end of the menu, however, because it really looked like something special. If you are ever on that main road between Sanibel and Captiva, this is an eating delight not to be missed; but remember, its’ out-of-the-way location makes it easy to pass it by. Heading toward Captiva, keep your eyes on the left side of the road and look for the sign. You won’t be disappointed.
