March 2008 - The Kringla Bakeri og Café at the Epcot resort in Florida serves up fantastic Nordic cuisine at an affordable price. Nestled amongst the World Showcase attractions in the park, the Norwegian bakery is an unassuming building designed as a rustic cabin. Food is ordered inside a small shop operated by young Norwegians. Ample seating is provided outside and underneath a dark wood awning. The café features an array of breads including pretzels and traditional potato bread with butter and cinnamon sugar. There are also a large selection of made-to-order gourmet sandwiches and many savoury desserts. I began with the crab soup; mushroom soup was the other soup available. The crab morsels were large and sweet tasting. Others in my dinning party agreed it was the highlight of the meal and the best food item of the day. I also enjoyed the salmon and cheese on a freshly baked croissant sandwich. The lunch was topped off with a great but simple Norwegian dessert: the veiled maiden. Made with applesauce, cinnamon and whipped cream, it was light and refreshing. Despite the fantastic flavours and reasonable portions, prices at Kringla are not particularly steep. Sandwiches are only about $8 after tax and desserts range from only $2 to $4. If you end up spending the day at the Epcot resort make sure to take the time to eat in Norway!
